contact formWhat is a Contact Form? It is a form on your website that the visitor can fill out IF they have a question for you or want to talk to you. After they fill out the contact form, the onus is on you to respond to their inquiry.

That is fine as business is all about building relationships to get your prospects to know, like, and trust you, right? So your website visitor takes a look around your website and sees something they have a question about. They complete your form and you get back to them – this is all a good thing. You can decide when creating whatever form you are going to use, what fields you want them to fill out. In other words, you can customize your form.

HOWEVER, what if someone comes to your site and DOESN’T fill out your contact form? Will you know they were there? What if they didn’t have a question, or they found your site not clear enough, or your contact form was not easily accessible (things you CAN control)? How will you follow-up with them to see how you can help them if you don’t even know they were there? The answer is simple – you can’t!

Here is The Difference Between a Contact Form and  Lead Capture Form

lead capture formFirst of all, you are going to strategically place your lead capture form on your website where they CAN’T miss it. Yes, you can and should also do that with your contact form. But herein lies the difference. You WANT your website visitors to leave their contact information so you CAN follow up with them in a series of well-thought out and well-written auto-responders. Auto-responders are a series of emails sent out over a period of time (YOU decide the time between emails) that continue to provide value to your potential clients/customers who are now on your “list” because they have opted in to your list by completing your lead capture form. Your auto-responder campaign is ATTACHED TO your lead capture form so this process takes place behind the scenes and is activated by an “opt-in”.

Now why would you expect someone to just GIVE you their contact information? You shouldn’t unless you give them a reason to. You will give them something they need or want and in turn, they will give you their contact information. Value for value.

There are certain things to keep in mind when creating your lead capture form. First and foremost, is make sure it is seen above the fold and prominently displayed on your website. You also have a few different options. You can use the actual embed form code or you can create a banner that leads to a lead capture form where you are still collecting contact information. You might want to try a combination and see which works best.

You want to ask as few questions as possible when filling out the required fields of your survey/lead capture form. The less a website visitor is asked to do, the more likely they will do it. I always like to make the phone number field mandatory as I want a way to follow-up with my leads. If they aren’t willing to give me their phone number, changes are they would not be a valuable lead for me.

Get Their Attention

grab attentionGain your reader’s interest by spelling out their problem and letting them know you understand how it feels to have that problem. The reader should say to himself, “Yeah, that’s exactly how I feel” when they read your copy. People are such strong creatures of habit that we rarely change our ways unless we feel great amounts of inconvenience, aggravation, or pain. In fact, companies are no different.

Most businesses trudge along doing the same old thing until things get so bad that they have to make a change.  Consider the following way to sell  garage door openers. How about telling a little story about what happens when your opener doesn’t work.  “There’s nothing worse than getting home in the evening and not having your garage door open. It’s dark outside and after tripping on the porch step you search for your front door key.  Finally, you find it only to scratch your new front door up trying to find the keyhole. Exhausted, you get inside and plop down on the couch just when you remember your car is still running in your driveway.…”  We have all experienced something similar to this type of scenario and it clearly shows how faulty garage door openers can cause a ton of aggravation.

How Can YOU Help THEM?

When someone visits your website and opts in to your list, it is now the time to tell them how they will personally benefit from your product or service. Don’t make the common mistake of telling all about the features of your product without talking about the benefits. People are not so much interested in you, or even your product or service, but they ARE interested in what your product or service will do for them.

Get a piece of paper and draw a line down the center of the paper. Now write all the features of your product or service on the left. Think about the obvious benefits and not-so-obvious benefits of each feature and write them down on the right side of the paper. Most of the time your product will have hidden benefits that people won’t naturally think of.

For example, a hot tub not only soothes and relaxes your muscles but it also gives you an opportunity to talk to your spouse without interruptions. The hidden benefit is greater communication with your spouse and ultimately a better marriage!

Bullet point each benefit to make it easier to read. Think about every possible benefit your reader may derive from your product or service. In many cases, people will buy a product or service based on only one of the benefits you list.

That depends. Does anyone know your phone number?

Even if a business owner truly doesn’t see the need for Internet marketing, just the fact that competitive companies in the same industry do have a web presence, in and of itself, is reason enough to make darn sure you are on the web too. Seems pretty obvious yet it isn’t so obvious to many people.

I have actually personally had a conversation recently with someone who wanted to write and distribute a newsletter. I am a big fan of newsletters, having run a non-profit association for years. It was my number one way of communicating with our membership on a monthly basis. I asked for contributions from members, ran “member of the month” contests and shared industry-relevant information as well as association news. So I definitely agree that newsletters are a great resource. However, this person I was conversing with, when asked how he would distribute his newsletter, responded with “there will be a sign-up form on my website.” Sounds great. Now how are people going to get to the website? He didn’t have an answer to my question. He didn’t understand or agree with the importance of Internet marketing. Good luck to him getting his newsletter out.
